May Mentoring Update
May 31, 2007 · by Tammy Adler
My MATC IT mentoring is going well. For the most part, since February, we’ve met every other week.
It took us a couple of meetings to get to know one another. After that, we began talking about the different roles (i.e., front-end and back-end developer, business analyst, project manager, DBA, quality assurance) within IT, different types of projects, sizes of shops and teams, types of technologies used, which shops hire interns, interviewing, etc.
We talked about the value of interning in your career field, or going back full-time to school while working part-time in information technology. As a hiring manager, I always like it when new graduates have practical experience, through internships or other means, on their resume.
We talked about the differences between information technology (writing business applications) and computer science (building chips and components), and companies that hire each type of professional.
We review job ads, talk about where to intern, who responds to unsolicited emails, contacts within companies, etc. There is no topic that is off limits.
