The Housing Center in Wisconsin

I recently attended a free weatherization class provided by The Housing Center, which is a joint project of the Dane County Housing Authority (DCHA) and Project Home. This non-profit group assists first-time home buyers, as well as those who aren’t so new to the home-ownership arena, with things such as the home-buying process and home maintenance.

The group believes that an informed homeowner is a good homeowner, and that good homeowners lead to better neighborhoods in the Madison and surrounding areas. In attending the class I found out that they really do believe this. The class was geared towards providing homeowners with non-biased information about home improvements they can make, as well as discussing specific issues that homeowners are facing and need help with. All of their advice and instruction was provided with an understanding of why these improvements can not only improve the quality of your home, but also save you money now and in the long run, something which has become much more important with the recent economy we’re all facing.

During the class we were also provided with an overview of the non-profit Project Home organization, which provides home-improvements to low and middle-income residents of Dane and Green Counties. This organization, through the support of local contractors and vendors, provides services that these residents couldn’t typically afford but are in most cases in need of such repairs and improvements. These local contractors and vendors donate not only supplies needed for the improvements, but sometimes also the services to do them as well. In addition, the organization is helped by monetary donations that are provided by generous donors, and also from government funds supporting such programs.

For those interested in the free classes that The Housing Center offers, or if you know of someone who might fit the requirements for the home-improvement services that Project Home provides, please take a look at the website links listed below. And for those interested in volunteer opportunities, the Project Home organization also supports volunteer programs such as Hammer with a Heart and the Dane County Paint-a-thon.
